Is magnesium sulfate by the intrathecal route efficient and safe?

Authors: Mebazaa MS, Ouerghi S, Frikha N, Moncer K, Mestiri T, James MF, Ben Ammar MS The polypharmacological approach to the treatment of postoperative pain has become routine in an attempt to minimize the adverse side effects of opioids. Magnesium sulphate is a noncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor and thus can modify nociceptive modulation.

Prozac may aid stroke recovery

Conclusion This study used a robust design for assessing whether fluoxetine could improve movement in people who have suffered a stroke. Its use of randomisation means that the comparison groups were likely to have been well balanced, and blinding reduced the chance that preconceptions about the effects of treatment could have affected how patients’ or doctors’ rated movement. There are a few points to note: Although larger than previous studies, this study was still relatively small at 118 patients.

The cPLA(2)α inhibitor Efipladib decreases nociceptive responses without affecting PGE(2) levels in the cerebral spinal fluid.

Authors: Nickerson-Nutter CL, Goodwin D, Shen MW, Damphousse C, Duan W, Samad TA, McKew JC, Lee KL, Zaleska MM, Mollova N, Clark JD The contribution of central PGE(2) levels to the nociceptive response in rats was assessed and the effects of the selective cPLA(2)α inhibitor efipladib, and pain therapies of different classes on these responses was determined. An inflammatory pain model was optimized in rats so that PGE(2) levels in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) could be directly correlated to the nociceptive response. Since efipladib appears to have limited permeation of the blood brain barrier, we used this compound to determine the extent of pain reversal resulting primarily from peripheral, but not central, inhibition of the arachidonic acid (AA) pathway.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of hypnotic suggestion on somatosensory thresholds evaluated by quantitative sensory testing (QST). Hypnosis was induced employing an unspecific hypnotic suggestion of distracted attention. QST measurements were performed in 23 healthy subjects on the back of the right hand before and during hypnosis.
