Characteristics of Patients Using Extreme Opioid Dosages in the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain (Shannon Essler)

Conclusions: The characteristics of patients taking extreme doses of opioids are congruent with those patient characteristics known by current, published guidelines to be risk factors for opioid abuse and diversion. As a result, we recommend clinicians should reconsider the appropriateness of any opioid prescribing above 115 mg/day in morphine equivalence and recognize that dosages ? 50 mg/day represent a community standard for the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain.
