Phantom radiculitis effectively treated by fluoroscopically guided transforaminal epidural steroid injections.

We present a case of L4/5 radiculitis in an above-knee amputee presenting as phantom radiculitis. Our patient is a 67 year old gentleman with new onset 10/10 pain in a phantom extremity superimposed upon a 40 year history of previously stable phantom limb pain

Activation of astrocytes in the spinal cord contributes to the development of bilateral allodynia after peripheral nerve injury in rats.

Authors: Obata H, Sakurazawa S, Kimura M, Saito S Activation of spinal cord microglia and astrocytes after peripheral nerve injury contributes to the development of behavioral hypersensitivity. Suppression of spinal cord glial activation attenuates the development of nerve injury-induced allodynia.

Differential effects of adenosine A1 receptor on pain-related behavior in normal and nerve-injured rats.

This study investigated the effects of N6-cyclopentyladenosine (CPA), a potent and selective adenosine A1 receptor (A1R) agonist in normal and nerve-injured rats and mechanisms of its action by behavioral tests and electrophysiological technique. The results showed: (1) In normal rats, intraperitoneal administration of CPA (1mg/kg) increased paw withdrawal latencies, in a way blocked by a selective A1R antagonist 8-cyclopentyl-1, 3-dipropylxanthine (DPCPX, 3mg/kg, i.p.), but had no influence on the threshold of mechanical stimulation

Herniated Disc Symptoms

Herniated disc symptoms are more than back pain or neck pain. Symptoms of herniated disk are called radiculopathy when the herniated disc presses on a spinal nerve root. Learn more about symptoms of herniated disc.

Repeated administration of pioglitazone attenuates development of hyperalgesia in a rat model of neuropathic pain.

Recent studies indicate the central neuroimmune and neuroinflammation activation play a critical role in the pathological states of pain. Pioglitazone, a potent synthetic agonists of PPARγ, has shown to control neuroinflammation in many nervous system-related disorders. The present study was designed to explore the effects of pioglitazone in treating neuropathic pain and its possible neuroimmune mechanisms in the neuropathic pain using lumbar 5 (L5) spinal nerve transection rat model

Steroid Shots Soothe Some Sciatica (CME/CE)

(MedPage Today) — Injection of steroids into the affected spinal nerve appears to ease lumbar radicular pain better than other types of injections, but still in only a proportion of patients, according to a randomized trial. Increased thermal and mechanical nociceptive thresholds in rats with depressive-like behaviors.

Authors: Shi M, Qi WJ, Gao G, Wang JY, Luo F Clinical observations suggest that depressed patients were less sensitive to experimental pain than healthy subjects. However, few animal studies are reported concerning the association of depression and pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) induced depression on the perceived intensity of painful stimulation in rats

Lack of analgesic efficacy of spinal ondansetron on thermal and mechanical hypersensitivity following spinal nerve ligation in the rat.

Authors: Peters CM, Hayashida KI, Ewan EE, Nakajima K, Obata H, Xu Q, Yaksh TL, Eisenach JC The balance between descending inhibition and facilitation is thought to be disturbed in chronic pain states. Increased facilitation by spinally released serotonin has been suggested by demonstration that mechanically evoked neuronal responses of wide dynamic range neurons are inhibited by 5-HT3 receptor antagonists in rats following spinal nerve ligation (SNL) but not sham operation
